Directionally solidified (DS) nickel super-alloys are commonly used in turbine blades for high temperature propulsion and power generation applications. The casting of these parts does not always assure perfect grain orientation, which is critical for their performance under high temperature and pressure. Our novel non-destructive analyzer based on X-ray diffraction has been successfully developed under Air Force support to measure DS turbine blade grain orientation in the most effective and efficient way.
